When one refers to a social pattern one is referring to the composite of traits, features, tendencies, characteristics, that form a consistent arrangement associated with an individual or group.
 
A convention can be a social pattern; a custom can be a social pattern.
When one defines a pattern in visual practices two things are referenced; a decorative design and a thing considered worthy of imitation e.g. a plan or diagram to be followed when constructing something.

A pattern is a perceptual structure. When a process is unpacked it reveals a pattern which can be viewed as decorative, flat, initially abstracted through its repetition. However all visual patterns include not only the objects, so to speak, but the spaces in between. These spaces through omission as much as presence, reflect social tendencies, conventions and customs.
