Gallery Hours: Mon - Fri: 10:00am to 5:00pm, Sat: 10:00am to 1:00pm

This body of work on paper negotiates the beginning and the end of everything - every beginning contingent upon an inevitable ending. Using these ideas as parentheses, Van der Byl's works attempt to articulate the sweet futility of our attempt to negotiate some sort of meaningful existence in the brief interim between being and not-being.

The aeroplane and the airport are the objects and places of this transition - fraught with anxiety yet bound by their own laws from which escape is impossible. The work pins our precarious existence on that of an unimaginably vast and indifferent universe and its inexorable winding down.
Van der Byl is an artist living and working in Cape Town. She is a part-time lecturer at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and this is her third solo show.
