Van Rensburg's work deals mostly with issues facing woman in a patriarchal, Afrikaner and Calvinistic society. She draws extensively from her studies in Psychology to guide her work and is interested in child development, gender identity and identity formation. People that have greatly influenced her work are the French artist Orlan and the American Photographer, Cindy Sherman -  especially as they portray the constantly shifting of roles and woman in society in particular.

Born 1969 in Pretoria, Thelma at first took a detour in life receiving her first degree in Physical Education from the University of Pretoria in 1992. Her pronounced interest in the human mind let her to a BA Hons Psychology in 2000. Being a bit of a late bloomer, Thelma eventually found her way to the arts with a Diploma from Tshwane University of Technology in 2006 and B-Tech Art degree in 2007 focusing on printmaking and painting. Since 2008 Thelma’s focus is predominantly the identity of the female form in a postmodern society expressed through digital art.
