ART EXHIBIT

Month of Peoples Photography (MOPP)

Venue: Various venues throughout the city
Gallery Hours: -
Duration:
2 - 29 May 2009

The Camissa Collective invites residents of Cape Town to attend and exhibit at its 5th annual Month of Peoples Photography free exhibitions. The collective has presented four successful one-month exhibitions during the past five years, and are proud to present this year’s  traveling  exhibition, themed Maybe Tomorrow, starting 2 May at Tsoga Community Centre, Langa and then moving to its other locations around the Cape Flats.
Opposing the trend of fixed galleries, The Camissa Collective and MOPP has created a large traveling exhibition, presenting images ranging from photo art to portraiture, landscape and photojournalism stories. The entire exhibition will move from Tsoga Community Centre, Langa to Gugulethu Library, then Mitchell’s Plain Library, Town Centre and finally Grassy Park Library in Market Square, while exhibiting at each venue for a week. The premiere at each venue will see live music and discussions with industry professionals.

The Month of Peoples’ Photography is an independent photo exhibition, showcasing a diverse and compelling mix of photographic work from people of all walks of life. It is about photography and people - a practical way of connecting and empowering people through the medium of still images. This year’s MOPP marks debut exhibitions for  many photographers, forming part of The Camissa Collective’s mission to extend the art of photography and the platform of social commentary to people outside the binding realms of established and often exclusive outlets for photographers.
MOPP continues its tradition of the “Open Wall” this year, where all visitors are encouraged to bring any number of photographs (printed, photocopied or whatever form you choose) to display as part of the entire exhibition. The subject of your photograph(s) should complement the Maybe Tomorrow theme.
The opening event of the traveling exhibition will be held at Tsoga Community Centre, Langa, and it promises an outstanding soundtrack of local artists including Brendon Bussy and the Marimba co-operative, Gavin Coppenhall, Tinus van Dyk and others. DJ Real Rozzano will also perform his special blend on the decks.
Cape Town can also look forward to a phenomenal line-up at the closing exhibition party, held at Assembly in Harrington Street. Enjoy an evening with some of South Africa’s finest DJ’s, featuring Niskerone, DJ Fletcher, DJ Ish, Hip Hop duo Chamber Concept, Farrel Adams aka Boogieman aka Frequalizer MC. Pre-sold tickets are available at the traveling exhibition venues at R10 per person, otherwise purchasable at the door.
