“Masculine refers essentially to qualities, characteristics or behaviours deemed by culture or society to be especially appropriate or ideally associated with men and boys” - (Random House Dictionary).
Running at Iziko South African National Gallery, Patriarch explores the shifts that have occurred in the way that male identity is depicted in the visual arts in the country. The emphasis is here deliberately placed on non-traditional and contemporary notions of masculinity.

The exhibition draws primarily on artworks from the Iziko South African National Gallery's Permanent Collection, ranging from the Butcher Boys by Jane Alexander to The Red General by Herman van Nazareth, as well as artworks on loan.
