INTERVIEW

Talking to the Dream Maker

Cape Town Today speaks to Adrian Hates, front man of Diary of Dreams, in his home in Germany on the eve of their Dream Collector tour to South Africa.
You are releasing special album specifically for the SA Tour, tell me more about it?
The Dream Collection consists of a collection of rare material - limited editions, bonus tracks, remixes, previously unreleased material and music that's been out of print for the past ten to fifteen years. It also has the first Diary of Dreams (DOD) track, which hasn't been released since 1993. That one's for the fans, so they can hear what we sounded like back when we started. All together the CD has sixteen track and a booklet along with it.
Has your music change over the past seven albums?
I hope so, music is like art - if you do not improve you should look for another job. It comes from the heart and you must improve, become more complex, more difficult, your skills must continuously improve.
How would you describe your music to people who haven't heard it before?
(Laughs) Ask any musician what he thinks he sounds like, and the fans will say the complete opposite. It really depends I suppose. In Greece the say we're gothic, in other countries we're called Dark Pop, Dark Wave. I have no clue really. I don't think about what I want to do, I just do it. Our music is dark, definitely alternative, but also accessible to the general market.
What can people expect from your SA Concert?
Well, lots of enthusiasm. It's great to come back and we feel very privileged. It took a lot of hard work to put this tour together and we just want to celebrate together. We've got four people on stage - keyboards, guitar, vocals and drums. We've got a very good lighting engineer and a specific look, but that's a surprise.
What music will you be playing?
Music from around 1996 up until now. We're bringing out a new album but decided not to include that - there's just too much music. We've already released over 150 tracks, so we want to stick with what people are more familiar with.
Do you know much about the bands you will be performing with?
I don't know Terminatrix because they're a new band, but I've known Mr Barelycorn for many years. They're very good and I'm surprised they haven't made it big in Europe yet.
