INTERVIEW

World Record attempt in Cape Town

DJ Moodswing has been behind the turntable for the past twenty seven years. He has toured with Duran Duran and can count Princess Caroline, Rod Stewart and Queen (the group) as past audiences. From the 8th to the 10th of April at Mercury Lounge he will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the longest set ever played by a dj in a club. Cape Town Today chats to him about his record attempt.
So what made you decide to do this?
DJ Moodswing: I've been doing this for so long but never really made a mark, so I contacted Guinness about what dj records there were and found this one.
Who has the current record?
DJM: A guy called Richard Dolby. He did in October 2001 at the Lekota Club in Bristol. His record is 49 hours and 18 min. I'll be going for 60 hours.
What's the longest you've been awake for?
DJM: About 42 hours. I was doing sound for Duran Duran and we had to set up back to back in Dubai and Abu dhabi.
How are you preparing?
DJM: Andi from the Blue Lizard will be preparing food for me - she takes it quite seriously - and I'll be eating a lot of proteins as opposed to carbohydrates. Of course there will also be lots of Red Bull and coffee.
What music will you be playing?
DJM: It will all depend on the audience at any particular time.
What are the Guinness stipulations?
DJM: There's a lot of them - There must be at least one person on the dance floor, but they can't stay longer than four hours at a time - so we'll be using a special armband system.
I can only use two CD players and there mustn't be more than a two second break between songs. There must be a full video record of the evening, photographs and sworn affidavits of all the people involved. Each track must be written down and I must play 8 hour sets at a time with a 15 min break in between.
Editor's note - DJ Moodswing played for 60 hours and is awaiting verification from the Guinness Committee
