Gary Hoffman3rd Cape Town International Summer Music Festival

Venue: City Hall, Darling St, Cape Town. Tel: 083 915 8000.
Time: 8:00pm
Price: R120 - R160
Performances: 20 Nov 2008
Genre: Classical

Soloists are the celebrated American cellist Gary Hoffman playing Lalo’s Cello Concerto, and the young South African pianist Tinus Botha, performing a work by a local composer Stefans Grové – his piano concerto “Raka”. The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Arjan Tien.
The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will then join the CPO and the two orchestras will together perform Beethoven’s famous Symphony No. 5: the symphony that has become emblematic of classical music for many, is an excellent choice to start the largest Cape Town International Summer Music Festival yet.  The festival consists of 18 concerts and ends on 18 December.
Soloist Gary Hoffmann gained international renown with his victory as the first North American to win the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986 and is one of the outstanding cellists of our time, combining instrumental mastery, great beauty of sound, and a poetic sensibility in his distinctive and memorable performances. He collaborates regularly with such celebrated conductors as André Prévin, Charles Dutoit, Pinchas Zuckerman, Andrew Davis, Herbert Blomstedt, Kent Nagano, Jésus Lopez-Cobos and James Levine.
