Set in the tranquil surroundings of the
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the well-loved family UCT RAG
concert is back, this year packed with top performers ready to sooth,
smooth and enthuse families and students in an evening of fun, music and
rhythm.
Started seven years ago, the concert has become an annual tradition of
family entertainment, where a diverse audience spends time relaxing in a
beautiful setting listening to an array of musical collaborations with a
variety of South African music, featuring both new and
established artists.

Providing a showcase of tastes catering for the young and the old,
from toddler to granny, to families and students, the line-up of
performers includes the UCT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock
and featuring the Bala Brothers along with the UCT Choir. The popular Cape
Town based band Plush will also play, performing with the orchestra on a
few pieces.
The musical programme will include songs ranging
from Freddie Mercury’s Barcelona to the Rocky theme, from Lion King
classics to ‘father and daughter’ waltzes. The concert has become a
highlight on the family calendar.
The opening act for the concert will be the 2008 ‘Launch Your Band’
winner, another UCT RAG team initiative run on an annual basis as a
‘battle of the bands’ type competition. Open to any and all bands in the
Cape Town region, the event embraces music as diverse
as rock, jazz, samba, African rhythms and classical music, often with
dynamic fusions. The 2007 winner of the competition, Palms Up, has
gone on to release a successful CD and is now receiving
national acclaim.
