“We want to raise enough money to sponsor a custom shaped
surfboard for anyone from the grass roots surf initiatives we support who
qualifies for a provincial surf team,” said Andy Davis, founder of Mahala,
adding “We also need money to deliver all the surfboards we collect from
here to other places in the country.”
Mahala collects and distributes surf equipment to
underprivileged communities, working with grass roots surf clubs in
Muizenberg, J-Bay, Port St Johns, Mdumbi, Umzumbe and the Durban City
Centre.
While entry to the surf festival costs R40, anyone who
brings a still usable old surfboard to the event will be given free entry.
So have take a look at your quiver and if there’s a board
that you haven’t used for a while that you think somebody else could still
enjoy riding, bring it along to the jol on Saturday night and enjoy a
social gathering of surfers, great music, comedy, videos and heaps of fun
for free.
