Benguela will be embarking on a national tour to launch their 4th album Black Southeaster. Starting on Friday the 23rd of July at the Theatre In The District, Cape Town, the tour will take the trio up to Joburg and Pretoria, down to Eshowe and back home via the Eastern Cape. It’s been a few years since their last tour and several since their last album, and the band are eager to get out of the house.

Benguela have been playing improvised music together now for over ten years and every show they play is a spur of the moment creative cesspool that explores both the ambient and the angular.

Their last collaboration with Tony Cox won the SAMA award for Best Instrumental Album 2008. They have also collaborated with cultural anarchist Koos Kombuis and internationally renowned poet Breyten Breytenbach.
Black Southeaster is to be released through Jaunted Haunts, a record label known for it’s fiercely independent musical repertoire. The album reflects the band’s harder edge and also seems to have more of a jazz influence if those who’ve heard it are to be believed. The recording process was also a step up from previous albums. Produced by Dirk Hugo and tracked at the new Sui Studios, the tracks have been quite heavily edited and added to - something the band as improvisors have not done before.
