The quintessentially hip UK pop-rock band Duran Duran
returns to South Africa in December where they will perform at the
Carnival City Big Top Arena in Brakpan nd at the GrandWest Grand Arena in
Cape Town.
The band was formed in 1978 during the new wave, post punk
era epitomised by songs that combined guitar riffs and synthesizers to
create a new style of melodic pop music.
Over the years their fans have included Justin Timberlake,
Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Paul Young, The Bangles and even the late
Princess of Wales. In June 1998, at the request of her family, the band
performed at a special Princess Diana Tribute Concert. Duran Duran has
also been named as a key influence by musicians such as Gwen Stefani,
Pink, Dido, Lostprophets, Franz Ferdinand, and Goldfrapp and Brandon
Flowers of The Killers. Numerous bands have also covered their music on
record and in concert.
Although they were nicknamed “the prettiest boys in rock”
their awards prove they were musically talented, in addition to being good
looking, glamorous style icons. Duran Duran achieved a phenomenal 14 top
10 singles in the UK charts and a further 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100
charts and they have reportedly also sold more than 75 million records.

The 1985 James Bond theme tune a View to a kill remains the
only Bond song to reach the number one slot on the US charts, and was also
the highest placed in the UK where it reached the number two slot.
In 1984 the band won two Grammy awards in the music video
categories and in 2003, their album Rio was listed at number 65 in the NME
100 Greatest Albums of All Time. Also in 2003, the band was booked to
present the MTV Video Music Awards, little suspecting they were to be the
recipients of the MTV Lifetime Achievement Award. They also received a
Lifetime Achievement award from Q Magazine later that year, and the BRIT
Award equivalent early in 2004 for an Outstanding Contribution.
In 2008 the band notched up another accolade when they
became the first rock band to perform in the impressive Pyramid du Louvre
in Paris in an effort to raise funds for the restoration of the
magnificent Louis XV drawing room.
Although the band never disbanded, five of the original five
members reunited in the early 2000s, and Duran Duran now consists of lead
singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bass guitarist John Taylor
and drummer Roger Taylor. Dom Brown joined the band as a guitarist in
2006.
Fans can expect to hear all their old favourites such as
Girls on film, Wild boys, Hungry like the wolf, Rio, Notorious, Ordinary
world and many, many more.
