The line-up now includes some more exciting names
like: Al Di Meola, Tumi & the Volume, Amanda Sedgwick and
Gilbert Matthews featuring Philip Harper, Kabelo aka Bouga
Luv, Ursula Rucker, Dondo, TY, Tasha’s World, Breakfast
Included, Harold Jephta & Trio, Mark Fransman’s Straight
And Narrow, and Ray Phiri with Stimela.
The festival's traditional four venues - Manenbergs, Kippies,
Baseline, and Rosies - have now been increased to five, so the number of
acts has also been increased to ensure a relaxed spread of acts over these
five stages.
Al Di Meola, the acclaimed jazz guitarist, is a major addition
to the Festival line-up. Al Di Meola’s distinguished career has seen him
working with Chick Corea in the group ‘Return To Forever’, and later in a
famous trio with guitarists John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia, with whom
he recorded the legendary album, ‘A Night in San Francisco’.
Ursula Rucker, who visited and performed in South Africa in
2003, is an acclaimed US hip hop poetess and is regarded as one of the
premiere spoken word recording artists in the music industry today. Ursula
has enchanted critics and fans across the globe with her diverse
repertoire, captivating vocals, and accessible poetic verse.
Tumi & The Volume are one of South Africa’s first totally live
hip hop bands. The Gauteng group released their powerful debut CD, ‘Live
At The Bassline’, in 2003. Tumi and the Volume are; Tumi (MC/poet), Volume- Tiago
(guitar), Dave (bass), Paulo (drums), and Kyla (violin).
The appearance of Ray Phiri with Stimela, the legendary SA
African-jazz group with their original line-up, is sure to be an emotional
highlight of the Festival. Breakfast Included is a popular Cape Town-based
jazz group with a sound that mixes elements of African-jazz and funk. Bouge
Luv-Kabelo is one of South Africa’s top vocalists, and was the "K" in the
name of the successful Kwaito group TKZee, before launching his solo
career with hit albums like ‘Rebel With A Cause’.
Amanda Sedgwick and Gilbert Matthews, featuring Philip Harper,
showcases the talents of saxophonist-composer Amanda Sedgwick, one of the
younger generation of musicians who have established themselves on the
Swedish jazz scene. Gilbert Matthews was born in Cape Town, but was forced
to flee to London in 1968 due to the political situation in South Africa.
From there he continued to New York and Los Angeles, where he took lessons
from, amongst others, Max Roach and Elvin Jones, before playing with
artists like Ray Charles and Sarah Vaughn. Philip Harper has made over 50
recordings, both as leader - his solo albums ‘Soulful Sin’ and ‘The
Thirteenth Moon’ on Muse Records - and sideman, which has earned him
number one position on numerous jazz play lists and critic polls.
Tasha’s World features Rotterdam-born singer, Natascha Slagtand,
whose vocal talents have been compared to Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. This
is due to her rootsy 'neo-soul' and organic sounds, complemented by sparse
but tough hip hop beats.
TY is one of London’s top hip hop artists who recently released
his debut album, ‘Awkward’ (Big Dada label), to critical acclaim. TY has
grown from an underground MC to an artist who is developing a strong
international reputation. While working on his second album, TY
collaborated with a variety of musicians, and has recently completed
tracks with Fela Kuti's drummer, Tony Allen, for his album.
Mark Fransman’s Straight And Narrow features Lee Thomson on
trumpet, Buddy Wells on alto and tenor saxophones, Wesley Rustin on bass,
Sean ‘Ou Tim on drums and samples, on vocals Melanie Scholtz and the
group’s leader and composer, Mark Fransman, on keyboards and samples. The
group fuses the harmonic and compositional elements of South African jazz
and modern 'sextet' style jazz, with the rhythmic structures of modern
dance music.
