The Cape Town Concert Series presents the acclaimed Sontonga Quartet.
The Dutch pianist Nora Mulder joins the Quartet in this performance, ahead
of their prospective tour of Holland later this year.
The programme consists of Dvorak's String Quartet No.13, one of the
greatest pieces of chamber music in the repertoire, Péter Louis van
Dijks's Iinyembezi ('Tears') which is based on John Dowlands song 'Flow my
tears', and the Adagio & Fugue K.546 by Mozart. Nora Mulder and the
Quartet will give a much anticipated performance of the extraordinary
Piano Quintet by Alfred Schnittke, the most significant Russian composer
of the last quarter of the 20th century.
The four musicians of the Sontonga Quartet - Marc Uys and Waldo
Alexander (violin), Xandi van Dijk (viola) and Brian Choveaux (cello) –
joined forces in 2002 and since then have made acclaimed appearances in
Europe, Singapore and South Africa.
Nora Mulder’s solo recitals and and concerto performances with such
orchestras as the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Orchestre de Liège and the
Netherlands Radio Symphony, have secured her reputation as a contemporary
music specialist in Europe, where she frequently performs in contemporary
music festivals. Ms Mulder also plays in duo with pianist Pauline Post and
with her has recorded two compact discs of contemporary works written for
them by Dutch composers.
