Saturday Night Fever
Man, what a week! Welcome to the first edition of our new weekly
column, Saturday Night Fever. What's it all about? Well, I'll be giving
you a run down of everything, well... most things, I got up to in the past
week on the entertainment front, and deliver my considered opinion on
whether it's worth doing, watching or putting in your mouth.
Being the intrepid adventurer that I am, I'll also endeavour to visit
a different entertainment-related establishment each week and give you the
low down. I know, I know, it sounds like a terrible ordeal, but in the
interest of democracy, freedom of speech and world peace, I have manfully
and selflessly decided to place this fearsome burden on my own broad
shoulders.
The week started of with a preview of "2 Men Talking" at the
Baxter on Monday night. Unfortunately it only ran for a week, but it
sounds like it will be back. Unlike most of the morose and soul destroying
plays with and HIV theme, 2 Men was upbeat, funny and positive (no pun
intended). It was also unusual in the two actors, Paul Brode and Murray
Nossel, play themselves, and the stories they tell each other are real.
On Tuesday we watched the decade of democracy tribute "New Day"
at Artscape. Quite an impressive show, very high tech with multimedia
components and lots of singing and dancing. I just felt that at times
there was too much going on on the stage. The show reflects some of the
most important events of the past decade, like our first election, the RWC
victory, TRC hearings etc, so in a sense it's a little predictable, but
these are events that happened and must be acknowledged, for those who
forget the past are doomed to repeat it, as they say.
On Wednesday it was time for a dose of culture with "More Operetta"
at Theatre on the Bay. Cast members were mostly from Cats, or due to
appear in Phantom of the Opera, so the performances were of the highest
quality. It was a lovely informal evening, with cast members acting out
and singing their favourite opera songs. Who said you can't laugh at the
opera?
The highlight of the week, however, was the opening of "Dating for
Dummies" at the Roxy Revue Bar. The charismatic Stuart Taylor has
devised a highly entertaining show, using his trademark combination of
magic and comedy. Most of the content is original, which is quite a feat
when you consider all the dating and man vs woman jokes out there, and
Taylor has a marvellous time pointing out the different dating techniques
amongst the different ethnic groups. I have to warn you though, it is a
little X-rated. And although quite funny, I can't say I learned a heck of
a lot about dating. Although I must admit that making a car appear out of
thin air is a heck of a way to pull members of the opposite sex. Or same
sex, for that matter.
Friday was reserved for that most sacred of institutions. That by
which we as men define ourselves, our masculinity and our position in the
male social hierarchy. Boys Night. Now I could tell you about that, but
then I'd have to kill you. And I really don't want to do anything that's
going to adversely affect traffic to this website.
As a result on Saturday I was bruised, cut above both eyes and my
knees were shaking! But I was determined to dig deep and come out swinging
for the final round. You know, now that I think about it, I'm one helluva
a guy, don't you think? We decided to head out to Deluxe for
"Destination Deluxe" and I have to admit I was a little disappointed. It's
a nice, clean club with a big dance floor and separate chill out area with
a comfortable Kudu (I think) skin couch. The drinks are fairly priced, the
staff are polite, and the music is good. It's just the club lacked any
vibe while we where there. There were quite a few people, but not a soul
was dancing. Granted we left relatively early (after 11:00pm) but the rest
of town was pumping!
Next week, amongst others, I'll tell you about a gem I've discovered,
the KGBar....
In the mean time, have fun and don't call me if you need bail money.
