Saturday Night Fever
So after two weeks of hard partying my engines were running on vapour
and I had to spend a couple of days at club duvet. Did that mean I wasn’t
going to have a good time? Hell no!
I was going to use this time to catch up on some dvd’s. Unfortunately
I have the uncanny ability to walk into a video store and pick the worst
movies of all time. Most of my selections ended up in the sandpit,
however, I did manage to knock some onto the fairway. If you enjoy an
intelligent script, I could highly recommend “Disclosure” and “Identity”.
“The Truth about Charlie” isn’t too bad for an action movie and for a bit
of escapism sci-fi and great special effects, try “The League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen”. Whatever you do, do not rent “Mimic 2” or “Out
for a Kill”.
By Thursday the force was once again strong within me, and we ventured
out to Po Na Na Souk bar in Heritage Square. Po Na Na is a North
African-styled bar with soft lighting, and plenty of plush, comfortable
cushions. The bar and ceiling beams are all built from dark woods and in
places the walls are bare stone, all which contributes to a cosy
atmosphere. Patrons at Po Na Na are diverse, from the young, well dressed
and trendy (like me) to the older, not so well dressed and not so trendy
(me in thirty years). The vibe inside is warm, cheerful and down to earth.
All in all, a great place for after work drinks.
On Friday night we went to the Workshop in Hout Bay, apparently
the smallest bar in Africa. The Workshop looks a lot like one would
imagine a bushveld pub to be, with licence plates, farm implements,
crutches and even old army boots hanging from the walls. There’s only
seating for about four people inside, but outside there’s a couple of
benches and a fire place, all surrounded by a quaint bamboo fence. I was,
however, quite shocked that at least 60% of the people drinking there
looked underage. Having drunk schoolgirls falling over me is not quite my
scene and I doubt I’ll go there again in a hurry.
On Saturday we had dinner at lacoza in Hiddingh Ave in the
Gardens. lacoza is a restaurant and lounge run by a very friendly bunch of
young South Americans. Décor is chic and minimalist with two non-smoking
dining areas downstairs, and an upstairs smoking dining area with lounge
and bar. There’s also a bookcase upstairs, so if the mood grabs you, you
can just chill out on the sofa, have a cup of coffee and catch up on some
reading. Another interesting addition is a dj deck, which one of the
owners manned throughout the night.
Food dishes are original and all with a South American flavour. The
vegetarian (just writing that word makes me feel soiled) in our group had
a butternut risotto, which she didn’t find particularly exciting (well,
what do you expect, there wasn’t any meat in it!). The rest of us, all
true-blooded carnivores, opted for meat dishes. I had a beef fillet with
noodle wok and coconut curry (very tasty), and the rest either had the
beef lomo with potato and leek mash, or the ostrich fillet with beetroot
papillote. Both dishes got resounding thumbs up. For five people,
including starters, main courses and a bottle of wine, the bill came to
R585. We toddled off after 1:00am and I have a feeling we’ll be back.
