This year's Carnival will feature some of Cape Town’s newest up and

Carnival highlights this year include a performance by Odyssey, featuring
the vocals of Remon, Steven and Nazeer. The group was established in 2002
and has since taken part in various variety shows and were part of the
Cape Town City Police Stay Safe campaign. They perform original R&B and
hip hop music. See them live on the main arena stage on Wednesday 25th
February at 21h10.
Thursday night includes Phase 1, a six piece jazz / pop / r&b band. See
them live on the main arena stage on Thursday 26th February at 19h50.
On Friday 27th February at 18h30 you can see CueCumber Jazz, playing songs
from George Benson and Ernie Smith to Latin standards.
Following CueCumber Jazz at 19h10 are Sistahood - a 6-piece, all-female

Friday night carnival goers will be treated to The Oriental Dance
Theatre Palace of the Winds at 19h50. Ajsa Samia and the Palace of the
Winds have a compelling vision and mission - to advance the true art of
Oriental (Belly) Dance in its various forms: Classical Belly Dance,
Oriental Folk Dance, Gypsy Dance various countries, Arabic Flamenco,
Fusion and Fantasy dance. Palace Of The Winds is the first Belly Dancing
group in the history of South African Belly Dancing to have been invited
to dance and teach at an International Belly Dance Festival in Germany and
Switzerland in March 2009.
No strangers to the Cape Town music scene, The Little Giants take the
stage on Friday night at 20h30. The group was established in 1999 under
the musical directorship of renowned Cape saxophonist Ezra Ngcukana and
pianist and long time music teacher. George Werner. The Little Giants have
adopted a repertoire of African standards, jazz standards and fusion.
Original composition has been an important aspect for The Little Giants
and the band has throughout its existence performed and encouraged
originality. The combination of a traditional rhythm- and a large brass
section has provided The Little Giants with a large band sound that is not
often found in community music projects of this nature.
Next up on Friday at 21h50 are Strictly Dancing. Strictly Dancing has
been in existence for just over 13 years, successfully producing a host of
dance extravaganzas and theatre shows. The company’s dance styles include
Ballroom, Latin-American, Funk/Modern, Theatre Arts (Adagio) and, of
course, Cabaret.
Saturday 28th February features amongst others, Dreamcast , a dance
group from Retreat and surrounding areas, which began in 2002 as a drama
group at the Squarehill Primary School. All dances are choreographed by
the members themselves, so that each child has the opportunity to provide
input and take ownership of the dance. The group’s Director is Mr Rowan
Esau, and is managed by Mrs Wendy Brown. Dreamcast currently has 42
members.
Saturday night’s final act is Orquestra Cuba Libre, a hot new musical
group based in Cape Town and offering an authentic Afrocuban experience by
showcasing both the nostalgic Cuban sound of the 1950's and the Salsa
sound of the new millennium called "Timba" with a local South African
twist. See them at 20h30.
