As a Cape Town first, the Iziko Planetarium, in conjunction with Sky-Skan, is offering an unique opportunity to experience firsthand a full dome planetarium show. Members of the public – and this is definitely something for moms, dads and the kids – are encouraged to come view a unique demonstration of technology and content that is taking audiences around the world to the edge of the known Universe.
Educational, entertaining and inspiring, the Definiti 8 channel 4K ultra-high resolution system uses 2 Sony SXRD 10K projectors, which for non-techno gurus means in layman’s terms that the public will be afforded an opportunity to view one of the highest picture qualities of any planetarium in the world! Demonstrations take place between Monday 6 April and Monday 13 April at 11h00, 16h00, 18h00 and 20h00.

The show schedule is as follows:
  • Tycho to the Moon (11h00) – meet Tycho, a dog who doesn’t just howl at the moon, but who wants to go there – especially aimed at children aged 5-10
  • Black Holes – Journey into the Unknown (16h00) – this visually dynamic production recently won a major award at DomeFest in the United States. It is narrated by Geoffrey Rush – for teenagers and adults
  • Awesome Light (18h00) – this production mixes extraordinary timelapse sequences of the telescopes and brand new discoveries of an extra-solar planet, a supernova observed in real time and a deep galactic survey that is changing the way scientists think about the evolution of the Universe – for teenagers and adults
  • Infinity Express (20h00 – except no show on Tuesday) – an exciting journey of discovery, dramatically communicating the latest breakthroughs in our quest to understand the Cosmos. A remarkable blend of science, art and entertainment. Narrated by Laurence Fishburne – for teenagers and adults
