One of Cape Town’s iconic family events, the Community Chest Carnival opens its gates for the 59th time this year.
What began in 1951 as a theatrical garden party has evolved into a pageant of international food, local entertainment and family fun, which attracts over 80 000 people. But there’s also a serious side to the festivities.

The Carnival raises funds for some 400 social welfare and development organisations that the Community Chest supports. These provide services ranging from healthcare and rehabilitation to child support and care of the elderly. The four-day event will be held at Maynardville Park, Wynberg from  Wednesday 24 February until Saturday 27 February.
It is made possible by the efforts of some 7000 volunteers who donate their time and skills to ensure that each year’s event is better than the preceding one. This year there will be a strong focus on ground entertainment such as drummies, stilt walkers and jugglers.
