The Cape Peninsula is set to host the inaugural
Kahuna Surf Series consisting of three surfing contests designed to foster
and encourage novice surfers to enter the competitive surfing arena in a
fun-filled and relaxed manner while improving their surfing skills.
Run by Western Province Surfing (WPS), the
governing body for the sport in the region, the first event in the series
will be held at Muizenberg on the weekend August 13 &14, followed by
similar events at Bloubergstrand in October and the grand finale in
Kommetjie in December where the series champions will be crowned.
The brainchild of Paul and Dene Botha from the
Kommetjie based Kahuna Surfing Academy, the series of events will cater
for girls and boys in under 10, U12, U14 and U16 age categories and will
be restricted to those surfers who have not previously made the finals of
any national surfing events except the annual SA Grommet Games.
“The Kahuna Surf Series is designed to introduce
newcomers to the sport and provide more competitive experience for Cape
Town’s future surf stars. There are loads of cool activities planned for
everyone who attends the events, which will still be highly competitive
with the series champions earning major bragging rights amongst their
friends and the chance to attract sponsorship from the surf industry,”
Botha added.
Contest winners in each age division receive
valuable prizes and certificates recognizing their achievement while the
series champions earn major surf industry products, medals and an
intensive three day high performance surf training camp presented by Dene
Botha, the country’s highest internationally qualified surf coach.
