SPORT & OUTDOOR

Cellars-Hohenort Opens its Gardens in Aid of Charity

Venue: Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, Constantia Valley. Tel: (021) 794 2137.
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm
Price: R35 (in aid of St Luke's)
Performances: 28 & 29 Oct 2006
The 9 acres of beautiful gardens will be open to the public to coincide with the South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show. Visitors will be asked to make a donation of R35 to St Lukes Hospice on entrance which will include tea and the “world famous” Cellars scones!
The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is also the proud winner of the Aliverti Floating Trophy for the "Most Outstanding Contribution" to the South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show 2005. Liz McGrath, owner of the Collection by Liz McGrath, Jean Almond and Simon Beebe were all part of the winning team. The winning garden is now a permanent fixture in the gardens of the hotel for all visitors to enjoy.
An area of interest in the beautiful gardens of The Cellars-Hohenort are the eight enormous camphor trees. According to Professor Wim Tuimens of Stellenbosch University, the trees were brought out from Japan by the Dutch East India Company and were planted in 1690 beside the road that came out from the Castle to Constantia, where vegetables and grapes were planted to extend the Company's gardens.  With urban development, most of these ancient trees have disappeared. But the eight remaining in the Cellars Hohenort garden are lovingly cared for and Liz McGrath has applied to the National Monuments Board to have them declared a National Monument for posterity.
