Freedom Of The Streets Festival

An 80-piece brass band, great entertainment, celebrity soccer match, and various games are just a taste of what can be expected at the first ever Freedom of the Streets Festival to be hosted in Cape Town by the Design for Living. Freedom Day kicks off with a bang as minstrels process in Sir Lowry’s Road in front of the Good Hope Centre where the official opening of the event will take place. The theme for the Festival celebrates the heritage of Cape Town and this is carried through the event programme. Come and experience the latest craze… street soccer.
The street belongs to the people. Bring your picnic blanket and basket and take back the street. With a great line-up consisting of a street soccer tournament and celebrity soccer match, local South African artists and reintroducing traditional games, among other “klawerjas” and “kennetjie;” and loads of entertainment for the kids.
The Street Soccer Tournament will consist of six teams with seven members aside. Each team will participate in the elimination matches and the winning team will be playing against the celebrity soccer team. This event is brought to you by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape, Kagiso Exhibitions and The Big Issue. Making the Western Cape a home for all and aims to raise awareness of street soccer and of the Homeless World Cup to be hosted in Cape Town during September 2006.
The Freedom of the Streets Festival boasts with several components like a Street Soccer Tournament leading up to the Homeless World Cup to be hosted South Africa during September.
Sir Lowry Road will be closed off to vehicles at the Tennant Street and Reform Street intersection between noon and 7:30pm. Parking facilities will be available behind the Oriental Plaza.
A mobile stage for entertainment will be situated at Sydney and Sir Lowry Road intersections and will also serve the dual purpose of closing the intersection. A 20 m x 10 m soccer pitch will be set up on the Sir Lowry Road pavement directly outside the Good Hope Centre. A games and Kids Zone entertainment marquee will be situated between the Oswald Pirow robots and the entertainment stage. Portable toilets will be allocated in Sydney Street.
