Melkbosstrand in Cape Town will feature a festival
of female surfing action next month when it hosts the Billabong “Girls Get
Out There” event on 4 and 5 February.
The third and final event on the 2005/6 Billabong
Girls Summer Surf Series caters for all segments of the rapidly growing
girls surfing community including the country’s top junior female surfing
stars, those wishing to test their skills in surf competition in a relaxed
and friendly environment and even girls keen on learning to surf.
The first major girls’ surf event of 2006 offers a
contest with R7 500 in prize-money plus plenty of sponsors products and
give-aways alongside FREE surf lessons for those
who have never surfed before.
The Girls Get Out There surf contest is expected to
attract the best junior performers from all parts of the SA coastline and
will crown champions in under 12, U14, U16 and U20 age categories. Amongst
those showcasing the current high standards of girls’ surfing will be SA
junior surf team members Tarryn Chudleigh (Scarborough), Nikita Robb (East
London), Melkbos local Chantelle Rautenbach and Lisa Mace who recently
moved to Kommetjie from Somerset West.
This quartet is expected to contest both the U16
and U20 divisions against a group of other standouts including Laetitia
Lee (Jeffreys Bay) while the likes of Heidi Palmboom (Bluff, KZN), Tanika
Hoffman (Tokai) and Bianca Buitendag (Victoria Bay) are favourites to earn
prize-money in the younger age divisions.
Prospective female surfers wanting to participate
in the free learn to surf lessons just need to bring swimming attire and
towels to the beach as Billabong will be providing surfboards, accessories
and Surfing South Africa (SSA) accredited surf instructors to conduct
introductory surfing lessons on both days.
