The Crazy Store Table Mountain Challenge,
now well established as one of South Africa’s premier trail runs, is
experiencing a rush of entries. ‘We have already doubled our subscription
compared to the same time last year’, said organiser Trevor Ball of
Adventure Works, and we’re expecting a bumper field on September 15th’.
This 35km trail run around Cape Town’s
iconic Table Mountain poses a gruelling challenge for experienced runners,
and attracts top athletes like Martin Dreyer, Bruce Arnett and Michelle
Lombardi. Leading international runners are also expected to enter the
race this year, and could challenge local domination of the event.
The 7:00am
start from Kloof Nek will see runners circumnavigating the fynbos
footpaths along the mountain slopes in a clockwise direction. Along the
way, they will traverse indigenous forest, cross mountain streams and run
through the pristine Orange Kloof area. This is usually off limits to the
general public, and is therefore one of the race’s major draw cards.
The team format allows less experienced
runners to enjoy Table Mountain Challenge as well. This means that even
novices can compete by taking part as relay teams, with legs varying in
distance from 8 – 17km. Stage 1 stretches from Kloof Nek to the block
house above Rhodes Memorial (8km), with Stage 2 comprising just over 9km
to Constantia Nek. Expect the final 17km to be challenging as you climb up
a steep ravine before returning to Kloof Nek along the top of the Twelve
Apostles.
