Earthwave – The Global Surf Challenge is the first worldwide
surfing event to be staged in one 24 hour period and arguably the first
sporting event of any kind to be run this way.
The project is expected to grow into the world’s biggest
annual mass celebration of the surfing lifestyle with surfers from every
country with a coastline participating in future years.
“The response to the Guinness World Record attempt in Cape
Town was overwhelming,” said Kahuna Surf Academy’s Dene Botha, who
masterminded the global surfing challenge.
“A total of 349 surfers all entered the water together at
Muizenberg in September 2006, making it arguably the biggest mass
participation surfing event ever held, and we’re hoping that nearly 5 000
will take to the surf in 20 or more events around the world on 2
September.”
With 60 days to go, South Africa and early adopters
Argentina, Brazil and Portugal are already fully registered for the
inaugural edition of Earthwave while organisations in England, Ireland,
Costa Rica, Fiji, New Zealand, Bali, Japan, Australia, Reunion, Sri Lanka,
Mozambique, France, Mexico and the USA are expected to join the growing
list of participating nations soon.
Where possible, Earthwave events provide a one hour webcast
of their attempt to break the world record. These will be synchronized to
produce a non-stop 24 hour live internet stream showcasing the global
surfing community.
Inspired by Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth” and
loosely based on initiatives by organisations such as Live Earth,
Earthwatch, Earth Day, Earthdance and Earth Hour, the interest in
Earthwave will be used to provide practical solutions on how everyone can
reduce their impact on the ecology of our planet.
