Woodturners will be demonstrating their skills and artistry over the
Easter weekend, 21 – 24 March 2008, using some of the wood recovered from
the "Magic Tree" – the legendary and much-loved old Breede River
Yellowwood in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, that blew down
during a windstorm in November 2005. Pieces of the "Magic Tree" turned
during the demonstrations over the weekend will be available for visitors
to take home as mementos.
In addition,
members of the Association of Woodturners of South Africa (AWSA) and the
Western Cape Woodturners Association (WCWA) will be staging an exhibition
of their recent work at the Old Mutual Conference Centre at Kirstenbosch
National Botanical Garden. Woodturners from all over South Africa will
have their work on display, while the demonstrations are in progress.

Items on
display will cover a wide range of forms, including classic "urn" shapes,
hollow forms, closed vessels, and a variety of shapes and sizes of bowls,
platters and natural edged bowls and sculpted pieces. Some of the pieces
will incorporate media other than wood, including inlays of resins,
precious metals, and other natural materials.
Internationally, woodturning is an emerging art form, and South Africa has
a number of talented turners who have participated and exhibited at
international woodturning symposia in the USA and the United Kingdom.
This collection of unique turned items showcases the skill, craftsmanship
and high quality finish of this creative artform, that is growing in
popularity world-wide.
