The Elgin Valley Market is set to enter a new era at the landmark
Peregrine Farm Stall where an open air market square has been built to
present a variety of organic foods and wines from the Elgin Valley.
The cobbled square, next to the iconic Peregrine Farm Stall on the N2
just over Sir Lowry’s Pass on the way to Hermanus, looks onto a large old
shed that has been opened on one side for a free flow of visitors and
surrounded by sheltered lean-to’s housing shelves and shelves of healthy,
wholesome and organic food, sourced from the Elgin Valley.
Following the international slow food trend, Justin Burls, owner of
the Peregrine Farm Stall and the market square, has brought together Elgin
Valley stallholders with seasonal, organic and low or no chemical fruit
and vegetables, free range meats, fish, chicken and eggs.

There are handmade cheeses, condiments, bread, honey, olive oil,
flowers, seedlings and more. With the Elgin Valley Wines winning
international gold and tipped to take over from other regions as the new
Western Cape trend setting wine area, there is an abundance of new wine
tastings to experience.
These include Paul Cluver, Elgin Vintners and Oak Valley who recently
made a mark at the Decanter worldwide awards and all feature prominently
in the John Platter wine guide. They include the exquisite Iona Sauvignon
Blanc that has won the International Wine Challenge.
The market focus is on the Elgin Valley and its producers. However,
sourcing of products extends to the whole of the Overberg region. Elgin
Valley is the gateway to the Overberg. As such, sourcing will not extend
beyond the borders of the Overberg.
“We have set up an exceptional food market. We have fresh, wholesome
food. The preference leans to organic products with a focus on the Elgin,
Grabouw, Vyeboom and Villiersdorp area. However, for products we could not
find here, we have included products from Bot River, Kleinmond, Hermanus
and the rest of the Overberg. And of course because of their abundance and
association with the Valley, flowers are a strong feature at the market,”
Burls says.
