The annual OBZ festival, the largest street festival of its kind in
Southern Africa, brings a celebratory mood to the cultural heart of the
Mother City.
The OBZ Festival remains one of the country’s leading street festivals
and is increasingly becoming a draw card for tourists who are looking for
the definitive Cape Town experience, says festival organiser Christopher
De Vries. “This year the OBZ Festival is closer to its goal of becoming
recognised as a street festival of national & international stature” he
says.
Headline acts including 340ml, aKing, Cofield Mundi, SAMA winners
Moreira Project and Claire Phillips, Closet Snare, Hog Hoggidy Hog
featuring Teba, The Rudimentals, Tribal Need and Blaq Pearl will join a
host of other top local bands and artists on the bill of the forthcoming
OBZfestival which takes place the weekend of December 5 – 7.
The festival incorporates three musical stages which will showcase
bands with musical styles that range from rock to reggae, acoustic to
metal and from jazz to hip hop.

“We believe we have come up with a line-up of musicians who will
appeal to everyone and which really showcases the incredible depth of
musical talent in the Mother City. We take pride in ensuring that up and
coming artists are given an opportunity to perform alongside established
bands and performers. In this way we reflect not only the cultural mix
which makes Cape Town such a centre of artistic expression, but we help
nurture new talent,” maintains De Vries.
This year’s music stages include OBZ Live, OBZ Loud, OBZ Acoustic,
Lazy Sunday and introduces a new Friday night concert, OBZ Loud – One
Night in Obz.
OBZ Loud - One Night in Obz will launch the festival on Friday Dec 5
at 6pm and is destined to become a festival staple. Along with top Cape
Town DJ, Fletcher of African Dope, it will feature Rus Nerwich, the
Rudimentals and 340ml. It will be staged in the Village Green which is the
hub of this year’s festival and entrance is R40.
The Village Green will also be the site of two of the Saturday
concerts, OBZ Live and OBZ Loud which kicks off at midday and lasts until
midnight. For an entrance fee of R20, festival goers will see nine top
bands including aKING, Nine, EJ von Lyrik, Hog Hoggidy Hog featuring Teba,
Napalma, Captain Stu, Natives from the Sun, Blaq Pearl, and others.
For those looking for a more serene musical experience on Saturday, on
OBZ Acoustic stage in the Arnold Street Park features Tamarin Seed, Ezra,
Adamu, Joshua Grierson, Jitsvinger, Adam Speaks, Mr Cat and the Jackal,
Afro Fiesta and Tribal Need. Entrance to the OBZ Acoustic venue is free
throughout the weekend.
Sunday’s musical offerings also include the OBZ Acoustic stage and the
popular Lazy Sunday jazz and R&B stage. Sunday’s acoustic artists will
include Cofield Mundi, Natalia, Julia Jakobsen, Tristan Waterkeyn, Kyle
Shepherd Trio and Xixel featuring Kolelo.
Lazy Sunday promises the best eclectic mix of music seen at OBZ
Festival. With an entrance fee of only R20 to the Lazy Sunday venue in the
Village Green, visitors to the festival can experience the best the city
has to offer. Headline bands Closet Snare and will be joined by SAMA
winners The Moreira Project & Claire Phillips, and Hot Water.
