Cape Horse Trials at Spier

Venue: Spier Wine Estate, R300, Stellenbosch. Tel: (021) 809 1100
Time: 9:00am
Price: R40
Date: 1-2 Nov 2003
More than 100 of the country’s top equestrians will ride in the Cape Horse Trials at the Spier Estate in Stellenbosch over the weekend of November 1 and 2. Ann Dalton of the WP Horse Society says the trials, formerly known as the Sappi horse trials, have moved from Vergelegen to the gorgeous grounds of Spier.
“The format of the event remains the same --- dressage and some Novice Showjumping on Saturday and a day of fun on the Sunday, with the cross-country, and Showjumping. Dog Arenas with  WP Dog Showjumping Championships, the Jack Russell Championships, dog displays and an unusual craft market comprising Vuka Creations and the Khayelitsha crafters."
“All the top riders will be there, Graham Wynn, Martyn Swanepoel amongst them and keen to try a virgin course which has designed by Tim Payne and been built from scratch, water jump included  by a team under the direction of Johnny Perreira. We are again catering for children with clowns, face painters and a jumping castle, plus a sort of do-it-yourself vaulting where a top German instructor,  Dorothea van Vuuren,  will show how to vault a horse. (Vaulting is basically gymnastics on horse back)  There will also be pony rides and, in fact, entertainment throughout the day."
“Spier has additional attractions,” Dalton says.  “The cheetahs and raptors are exciting to see, and of course the famous Spier picnic baskets will be available for purchase. A marquee with Spier salads and delicacies, boerewors rolls wines and other refreshments for sale will also be provided for the benefit of visitors. In keeping with Spier’s policy, no food or drink is allowed to be brought on to the premises, and no dogs other than those on show will be permitted.”
Visitors entering Spier from the Annandale Road will have horse and carriage shuttles to take them the short distance to the main arena.
Entrance on Saturday is free. Tickets for the funday on Sunday are R40 at the gate from 09:00. Children under 12 free, pensioners R25.  Picnics can be ordered from Spier on tel (021) 8091127 or (021) 809 1949 office hours. Inquiries to Spier on tel.  809 1100 WP Horse Society  712 4765 or Agri-Expo 975 4440.
