SPORT & OUTDOOR2004 Rip Curl Gromsearch # 1Venue: Cape Peninsula (mobile venue)
|
|||||||||
The first of seven once off national Rip Curl Gromsearch events will take place at the most suitable Cape Peninsula venue.The Rip Curl Gromsearch contests are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA) and each event will highlight the talents of the nation's up and coming Under 16 boys and girls and Under 14 and Under 12 boys.The Gromsearch is part of an international programme initiated in Australia four years ago by one of the world's best known surfing brands and tournaments now take place in Brazil, USA, New Zealand, France, Spain and Portugal.Next weekend's event will use the traditional "mobile" venue which means that the most appropriate surf on each day of competition will determine the venue. Last year the local Rip Curl Gromsearch took place at Muizenberg Pavilion, the site of a horrific shark attack three weeks ago. Organisers have confirmed that while Muizenberg will still be considered as a venue for next weekend’s event the safety of the competitors will be the prime consideration when deciding where the contest will be held.The Rip Curl Gromsearch contests will be run by the officials from WP Surfing and are designed to involve both novices and experienced contest surfers.Entry forms for this weekends Gromsearch are available off the SSA website www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za and from the Rip Curl shop in Long Street. The event is open to anyone who falls within the specified ages and entries close on Tuesday April 20.A competitors briefing will be held at the Rip Curl shop at 5.30 pm on Friday April 23 and in order to receive the contest showbag packed with surf items worth R200 all contestants must attend the briefing.There are great prizes such as Rip Curl watches and wetsuits on offer to finalists in each divisions with the leading edge wetsuits bound to be appreciated by surfers braving the Western province’s chilly surf. The top two under 16 boys and top under 16 girl have the added incentive of qualifying to compete in the Gromsearch Grand Final in November. |
