Roxy Surf Jam Series Moves to Cape Town

Venue: Surfer's Corner, Muizenberg. Tel: (031) 313 1486
Time: -
Price: -
Performances: 11 - 12 Sep 2004
The fourth stop in the Roxy Surf Jam series will be staged at Surfers Corner at Muizenberg on the Cape Peninsula on the weekend September 11 & 12 and will again feature most of South Africa’s top junior female surfing talent along with a host of aspiring future surf stars.
The Surf Jam series has been created by Roxy, the country’s leading women’s surfwear brand, to offer the fast growing girls segment of the surfing population on the SA coastline an interim step between the entry level surf schools and the Roxy Wahine Cup, the country’s sole rated women-only surfing event.
Each tournament features competitors in Under 14, U16, U18 and U20 age categories with many of the participants electing to compete in more than one division in order to gain more experience or, in the case of the top contenders, to earn more of the R10 000 total prize-money at stake at each venue.
Cape Town’s multiple U20 surfing champion, Stacey Guy from Melkbosstrand, will be favourite for the for the prestige U20 division of the Muizenberg event. Guy won the third Surf jam at St Francis at the end of July, and in the absence of SA U20 champ and fellow Roxy team member Rosanne Hodge (EL) due to study commitments, the biggest threat to her dominance will come from Kommetjie’s Sarah Nicholson and rising star Nikita Robb from East London.
The inaugural Roxy Surf Jam series of contests consists of six events for girls and is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA). The series serves an important dual role for the female gender in the sport, attracting fresh talent to competition surfing while providing the more seasoned surfers with regular competitive opportunities, which were previously lacking.
