The fifth and penultimate stop in the Roxy Surf Jam
series will be staged
at Long Beach in Kommetjie on the Cape Peninsula and will again feature
most of South Africa’s top junior female surfing talent along with a host
of aspiring future surf stars.
Created by Roxy, the country’s leading women’s surfwear brand, the Surf
Jam series offers the fast growing girls segment of the SA surfing
population an interim step between the entry level surf schools and the
Roxy Wahine Cup, the country’s sole stand-alone rated surfing event for
women.
Each tournament features competitors in Under 14,
U16, U18 and U20 age categories with many of the participants electing to
compete in more than one division in order to gain more experience or, in
the case of the top contenders, to earn more of the R10 000 total
prize-money at stake at each venue.
The prestige U20 division at Long Beach is shaping
up as another epic confrontation between Cape Town’s multiple U20 surfing
champion, Stacey Guy from Melkbosstrand, and fellow Roxy team member and
SA U20 champ Rosanne Hodge from East London, both of whom have won this
title in Surf Jams earlier this year.
The weekend’s event will kick off with the final
rounds of the fourth leg of the Roxy Surf Jam Series, which have been held
over from last month when the surf at Muizenberg Corner was deemed to be
uncontestable. Those girls remaining in the U14 division from the fourth
event are requested to meet at Muizenberg Corner at 3pm on Friday October
8 where their division will be completed, while the final rounds of the
U16, U18 and U20 divisions will be completed at Long Beach over the
weekend.
