The Ivory Room
Walking into the Ivory Room one is overwhelmed by the rich, seductive
aroma
of worn leather and an interior that oozes colonial charm. Large,
comfortable leather couches and chairs are abundant, wood panelling is
plentiful and the lighting subdued and intimate. Provocative sepia and
black and white photographs by Capt James Ivory adorn the walls and a
lavish chandelier hangs over the wooden dance floor. The Ivory Room is
reminiscent of exclusive gentlemen’s clubs of years gone by, but of course
ladies are welcome.
Recently
appointed manager Anya Kruger conducted research amongst Capetonians and
found that “People are tired of pretentiousness”. Consequently Kruger
decided to alter the format at the Ivory Room. The venue now opens on
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30pm as a relaxed lounge for
after dinner drinks. “It’s a very Café del Mar, chilled-out lounge vibe,
with a wide variety of music to suit clients needs. If they would like to
listen to Robbie Williams, Frank Sinatra
or Nina Simone, we are able to accommodate them.” Kruger says.
A
cover charge is only enforced on Friday and Saturday nights when Ivory
Room transforms into a stylish and upmarket nightclub, mostly attracting
people 25 years and older. “But the type of people we get varies depending
on the type of music and party that’s on” Kruger says. “The cover charge
is usually R30, but again that would depend on the type of party.”
Normally
Dj Nadir plays eclectic music on Friday nights. On Saturdays the doors
open at 10:00pm for the recently launched “Mogul”, a series of innovative
weekly theme parties designed by the coordinators of Voyage. For more
