Purgatory Nightclub
The Purgatory nightclub in Green Point opened its doors in December
2003. Aimed at the more exclusive 25 to 45 year-old market, this intimate
nightclub has quickly become one of the most popular nightspots in town.
According to Purgatory manager Richard Gradner, “Roman Catholics
believe people who have been chosen to go to heaven, first go to the
purgatory to be cleansed of all their sins. In a clubbing environment
Purgatory is a place to go to cleanse yourself and let loose and let go”.
Resident Dj’s are Nick Matthews and Dino Moran, who play uplifting
house music. “On a Wednesday night people are more likely to go to a bar
than a club, because it’s a working day”, says Gradner. As an alternative,
Purgatory offers a cabaret show, free entrance plus a bar environment.
On Thursdays Purgatory hosts a Latin-flavoured model agency party from
9:00pm to 11:00pm, after which the doors are opened to the public. The
cover charge is R50, and ladies are allowed free entrance until midnight.
Fridays and Saturdays are usually sponsored events which, according to
Gradner, adds more value to the experience.
Purgatory does not offer club membership. Instead clients are offered
the option where, for a R1000, a group of up to 8 people get a table
downstairs in the VIP room and a bottle of Moet and Chandon valued at
R650. This makes the VIP experience more exclusive. “It’s more about
building a personal relationship with the patron then just selling a
membership,” Gradner explains.
In this way Purgatory caters to two distinctive markets: The upstairs
bar and dance area focuses on younger clubbers, while the downstairs VIP
area is more suited to the older clientele who prefers a quieter, more
relaxed experience.
Purgatory offers secure valet parking to clientele and an in-house
photographer who uploads photographs to the Purgatory website on a weekly
basis. A weekly electronic newsletter is also sent out to subscribers. For
