Dancers from Namjive, La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre, Vadhini
Indian Arts Academy, CAFDA Youth Dance Company, Jikeleza, Cape Academy of
Performing Arts, and Wilvan School of Dance will all be featured, as will
dancers selected from the Western Cape Education Department Focus Schools.
Manyaapelo explains that dancers will sometimes perform as individual
companies, but will also be paired together in collaborative dance pieces.
Although she has been involved in many previous Jazzart
productions both on stage and behind scenes, Danscape marks Manyaapelo’s
directorial debut. She points out that she is fortunate to be able to draw
on support from her colleagues – Jazzart stalwarts such as former artistic
director, Alfred Hinkel, and dance makers such as Ina Wichterich, Ananda
Fuchs, John Linden and Sbonakaliso Ndaba.
Manyaapelo believes audiences will be blown away by the
talent of the dancers this year. “Having seen Danscape evolve over the
past few years, I believe we are all shifting to another level with a
better standard of dance emerging. It is inspiring to see how these young
dancers are enjoying the challenges that we are presenting them, both
technically and artistically,” she adds.
Jazzart has also been renowned for collaborating with local
musicians such as Sibongile Khumalo, Heather Mac, Tina Schouw and Neo
Muyanga. Live music will also be one of the features of the Danscape
season with musical director Sakhile Moleshe and his musicians creating
original music for the dancers.
