iKapa Dance Theatre is getting ready to showcase their first full length production for the 2009 season and in keeping with their innovative approach to dance they will be staging the much acclaimed avante garde production, The Stadium, choreographed by South African Andile Sotiya. The Stadium, being performed previously in London and Leeds in 2003, promises to engage audiences through its experimental deconstruction of the status quo definitions of society and art.

The production uses the cultural complexity of stadiums as urban, creative spaces to re-evaluate the dominance of high-art in a world that’s increasingly being characterized by the triumph of the popular. The choreography revolves around games, issues and athletic dancing; breaking down the barriers that inhibit us to play with the pieces of our urban existence. This, according to Andile, is especially relevant in South Africa, where stadiums are used for cultural events as diverse as concerts, political rallies, sports games and even funerals.
The Stadium is one hour in length and will be showing at Artscape Theatre from the 2nd – 5th of July 2009.
