Noah of Cape Town is the country’s first full-length a
cappella musical, created by a stellar artistic team and performed by
sixteen talented local voices.
“Noah of Cape Town has been eight years in the making and is
going to be a unique theatrical feast,” says director Jaci de Villiers.
“It blends beautiful music, witty dialogue and sexy design with
environmental issues and is an interesting story about the human
condition.”
The inspiring original songs and idea are by Fleur du Cap
winner, Graham Weir, of Not the Midnight Mass fame with the script written
by Weir and fellow Fleur du Cap winner, theatre improvisation whizz, Megan
Choritz.
Costumes and set design are by Dicky Longhurst, lighting by
Mannie Manim and musical direction with additional arrangements by Amanda
Tiffin. The cast has been announced as: Anton Luitingh, Chantal Herman,
Christine Weir, Eben Genis, Francesco Nassimbeni, Genna Galloway, Gilé
Motshwane, Gys de Villiers , Keenan Arrison, Lerato Moloi, Lindy
Abromowitz, Nicole Holm, Nqobile Sipamla, Sandile Gontsana, Shaun van
Staden and Vuyo Myoli.

The production was initially performed in a Cantata version
as part of Artscape’s 2005 New Writings Programme.
Reflecting from two hundred years in the future, the story
is set in 2020 when Cape Town, like every other city in the world, is
suffering from the effects of global warming, fuel shortages, war and
corruption. Law and order break down as desperate people do whatever it
takes to obtain food and water. Can there be any hope left for survival?
Enter Gareth Martens, the man nicknamed Noah. A
twenty-something everyman, Noah experiences visions that warn him about a
forthcoming flood. Although conflicted and confused, he is compelled to
follow his calling, escaping to the Karoo which is now a desert, and
preparing to build an ark.
“Awakening a greater level of consciousness in ourselves is
another underlying theme in this production,” says de Villiers. “We are
bringing together different cultural, spiritual and historical
perspectives that have influenced society to create an entertaining
evening.”
“With natural global disasters such as Hurricane Katrina,
runaway forest fires and severe droughts and flooding, the story of Noah
of Cape Town is not so far-fetched!” says Simon Cooper of Uncomfortable
Productions, producer of Noah of Cape Town.
“We want to assist audience members with taking action to
help save the planet and are seeking sponsorship for our Noah Plant a Tree
programme. This is based on the UN Environment Program’s billion tree
initiative, which aims to plant 7 billion trees by the end of 2009. Our
goal is to give everyone who comes to see the show a pamphlet that they
can exchange for a tree at a participating nursery,” says Cooper.
