Written by CEO and Director of
the Baxter Theatre Centre, Lara Foot, and developed in collaboration with
Leila Henriques, Brian Webber and Joss Levine, Womb Tide was first
performed to great acclaim in 1995 and now comes to the Baxter Golden
Arrow Studio from 10 November to 4 December.
Visual theatre company FTH:K’s
interpretation of this unconventional love story opened on the Arena of
the National Arts Festival 2010, Grahamstown and has been hailed as ‘fresh
and exciting theatre’, ‘mesmerising’ and ‘pure magic’.
Set in the mid to late twentieth
century South Africa, Womb Tide follows an eccentric and somewhat
dysfunctional family through a story of love, loss and hope, and paints an
impressionistic portrait of the complexities of family life. Told through
the memory of a child, Womb Tide is at once deeply moving, funny, dark,
heartbreaking, and ultimately redemptive.

More than just simply a remounting, Womb Tide is a complete
overhaul of the original story, given FTH:K’s approach to creating fresh,
startling, visually accessible work. This is given emphasis, by the
mentoring of director Rob Murray by theatre maestro Lara Foot.
Created by a stellar crew of collaborators, including Craig
Leo, James Webb, Brydon Bolton, Leila Anderson and Cristina Salvoldi, Womb
Tide is a paean to love and perseverance and a tour de force of visual and
physical storytelling.
“It’s been an honour to work with such an
esteemed team and we have been thrilled with the response this new
production has received so far,” says FTH:K Artistic Director Rob Murray.
“I am extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to be mentored by
theatre maestro Lara Foot through the development of the show, and in turn
enhance my skills as a director.”
Womb Tide is directed by Murray, who recently won a Fleur du
Cap award for Best Lighting Design for Pictures of You. Props are by
Emilie Starke and acclaimed designer, performer and puppeteer, Craig Leo,
who also did the set and puppet design. Leo has worked extensively with
The Handspring Puppet Company, including War Horse and the recent Or You
Could Kiss Me, both at the Royal National Theatre in London.
