In this charming tale Aesop, a Greek slave, learns that liberty comes with responsibility as he journeys to his own freedom, joined by the animal characters of his parable-like fables. The Tortoise and the Hare, the Lion and the Goat, the Stork and the Wolf and others are brought to hilarious life through the musical score, adapted for Isango Portobello by Mandisi Dyantyis and Pauline Malefane.

This musical theatre showcase, using mostly marimbas, vocals and percussion, can be enjoyed by the whole family, and will be running during the World Cup when the schools are closed for winter holidays. Both parents and children will get pleasure from this welcome artistic interlude in-between all the soccer.

The set-designer responsible for re-creating Aesop’s magical world on stage is Leopold Senekal, joined by Aja Marneweck as co-designer and puppeteer.

“The beauty of the story is that the fables penned by Aesop contain a lighthearted moral message for adults to be able to engage with it, but it is also a lovely story told by animals that children would enjoy for its sheer entertainment value,” said Dornford-May, Isango Portobello’s Artistic Director.
