So what's it all about?
Billionaire Magnus Martel (Terence Stamp) gathers together the world's
greatest scientific minds to find a powerful, ancient religious relic, The
Loculus. Halfway through the search the group is murdered by a mysterious
group led by the immortal Grand Master (Udo Kier).
Shortly before his death, Martel gives his son, Jake, (James D'Arcy) an
encrypted disk with clues to the whereabouts of The Loculus. With the help
of alchemist Mira (Natasha Wightman) Jake unravels the clues, which takes
them on a journey across Europe in search of the relic. But the Grand
Master is following in their footsteps..
Is it any good?
Revelation is an absorbing, thought provoking thriller. It is
immensely rich in detail and historical references regarding Christianity,
science, the occult, alchemy and The Order of the Templars. The true
contents of the Loculus also remain a mystery throughout most of the film,
and details are only revealed to the audience as the characters discover
them.
Camera techniques are standard and there are no expensive special effects.
The film rather relies on its complex and meaty storyline for success. Be
warned - you really have to concentrate in this one to appreciate it.
The only weakness in the story is the lack of detail surrounding the
immortal Grand Master. Who is he, and where did he come from?
