So what's it all about?
An archaeologist, Professor Johnston, (Billy Connolly) is receiving
information about a recently discovered site from a research company. The
information, however, is far too accurate. The Professor sets off to find
out how they are getting their information and disappears. Then his son,
Chris, (Paul Walker) and a group of archaeology students discover a
message from the professor at the dig site… dating back to the thirteenth
century.
The research company admits they have discovered a wormhole and Chris and
his friends go back into the past to find his father. And get caught in
the middle of a war between the French and the English.
Is it any good?
The problem with Timeline is it could have been so much more. It's
based on an excellent best seller by Michael Crichton and directed by
Richard Donnor (Superman). One would expect a big budget epic combining
past and present, instead you get a fairly enjoyable made-for-TV movie.
The cast is reasonably impressive, including Billy Connolly, Paul Walker,
Mat Craven and Gerard Butler, but they aren't really presented with much
to work with. Filming techniques are standard and dialogue uninspiring.
This is pure, mentally undemanding, escapism
I did find the castle siege quite impressive, particularly the special
effects of the trebuchet onslaught.
Watch Timeline without too many expectations and you could enjoy it.
