Kringe in 'n Bos

Dalene Matthee’s Kringe in ‘n Bos, which became an international best-seller, is this year’s prescribed work for Grade 12 learners of Afrikaans.

The purpose of this production by Artscape in collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department and the SBA (Stigting vir die Bemagtiging van Afrikaans), is to give learners a better insight into that which they are reading.  By seeing the action on stage, that which only existed on paper becomes alive and real.

Marinda Engelbrecht, director of the production says “it is an incredible privilege to be able to direct Kringe in ‘n Bos.  We would like to cultivate a love for the theatre within our youth and make a visit to the theatre a positive experience.  Come and witness the magic of sound, lighting, technology and wonderful acting”.

In this year’s production the actors are a combination of youth and experience.  The dramatic main role of Saul Barnard is played by Geon Nel and Tinarie Van Wyk Loots is the female lead, Kate MacDonald. The well known actor and former presenter of kyk-NET, Francois Toerien, portrays the characters of Oom Andries Barnard, Josef Barnard, Crompton and MacDonald.  Veteran theatre personality Ivan Abrahams plays Maske, the family’s woodcutter.  Deon Lotz plays Saul’s father, Joram Barnard and Lorraine Burger is the narrator and also portrays the roles of Caroline MacDonald and Mrs Stopforth.
