Big Band performing
Jazz lovers can look forward to a picnic concert with Doc’s Big Band, an 18-piece jazz band from Germany, at Die Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on Saturday 12 March. All profits from the concert will be donated to Destiny House, a safe house where abused and abandoned babies, identified by Tygerberg Hospital, are placed.

The band members are mostly professional men and women, including medical doctors, lawyers and prominent business personalities. The band consists of five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, vocals and a four-piece rhythm section. Their repertoire ranges from classical big band swing over funk, jazz-rock and Latin music to easy listening. Besides several concerts all over Germany the band has also toured in Europe, the USA and previously in South Africa.

The concert starts at 17:30 and ends at 20:00. The gates open at 15:30. Tickets are available at the gate and are R50 for adults and R20 for children. Entrance is free for children under six. The concert takes place on the lawn below the Monument. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or they can order a basket from Volksmond Coffee Shop’s picnic menu (tel. 021 863 2800 or [email protected]).

The band will be performing at various venues in and around Cape Town from Saturday 5 March to Saturday 12 March. Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) will be hosting the band members during their stay, as part of a collaboration between Germany and the Western Cape aimed at establishing a platform for artist exchange programs.
