The Gugulethu Tenors, the Afro-operatic pop sensation that has captivated audiences with their breathtaking sound and enduring story, will perform live in concert at the Fugard Theatre for one night only on 9 March 2012.
The Gugulethu Tenors’ incorporate contemporary and subtle ethnic elements in their opera inspired music, embodying the rich, cultural diversity of South Africa. This vocal feast offers something for everyone – from opera favourites like Nessun Dorma and contemporary classics like You Raise Me Up, to South African favourites such as Meadowlands, Pata Pata and even Liefling, as well as their own moving compositions like O Afrika! and Nyamezela. The Tenors - Xolani November, Siyabulela Gqola, Mpendulo Yawa and Loyiso Dlova - have become a household name in South Africa since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2011.
Their journey to success, which started more than 10 years ago as high school learners’ with big dreams of being on stage, has been widely publicised and serves as an inspiration to many. Today the Gugulethu Tenors - who have been described as “South Africa’s Il Divo”, “Pavarotti’s Children” and “the Diamonds of the Township” – are living their dream and enchanting the concert halls and corporate stages of South Africa with their collective song.
Concert-goers can expect to be enchanted by the soothing harmonies and remarkable voices of a proudly home-grown four-piece group, who have graced the stages of SA’s top events and festivals, and have shared billing with local and international headliners such as Steve Hofmeyr, Jannie Moolman, Baabaa Maal and Sterling EQ, and performing for politicians, dignitaries and superstars including Oprah Winfrey, Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Sydney Poitier, Mary J Blige, Quincy Jones and others, at the opening ceremony of Oprah’s Leadership Academy in Johannesburg.
