Description
Roelof Rossouw began painting seriously in 1992, having previously used his creative talent in the fields of graphic art and medical illustration. He has had thirty seven solo exhibitions between the period of 1988 and 2011, as well as exhibiting in group shows in South Africa, London, Glasgow, Jersey, Galway, Armagh (N. Ireland) San Francisco and Miami. This marks Roelof's thirteenth solo exhibition at The Cape Gallery.
"I've chosen to consider the field workers, the people at home or lingering on the street corners of small Karoo towns of the Cape, like Carnarvon. I found these towns warm and sociable with lots of people in the streets, some just sitting in the winter sun, others chatting on a corner. The beautiful old houses were run down and neglected, but this adds to their character. As a colourist, I was intrigued by the challenge of portraying the dramatic contrast between sunlit areas and long, cool shadows in the early morning and late afternoon."
