The Confraternity of St James, a Public Benefit Organisation which assists prospective pilgrims from South Africa who plan on walking along the Camino de Santiago, has selected StreetSmart as the beneficiary for the screening of this feature film directed by Emilio Estevez. StreetSmart SA is an organisation dedicated towards helping street children rebuild their lives through public donations with the support of a network of restaurants throughout Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Franschhoek and Paarl.
Margi Biggs, Chairperson of StreetSmart SA, has undertaken the epic pilgrimage along the Camino Francés in Spain twice to raise awareness and funds for the organisation. This trek saw her walk 800km unaided and alone for 7 weeks, with all proceeds dedicated to homeless children in the Mother City.
StreetSmart SA is a registered Public Benefit Organisation as well as a Non-Profit Organisation and funds are primarily raised by participating restaurants adding a voluntary R5 donation to each table’s bill. Every cent raised in this way goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. The organisation was set up by a group of concerned Capetonians under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and comprises resourceful board members representing business and the hospitality and tourism industries. Similar StreetSmart organisations also run independently in the UK, San Francisco and Australia.
Tickets to watch “The Way” cost R40 per person and are available from the Labia on Orange by calling Tel: 021 424 5927. Booking is essential. All proceeds will go to StreetSmart SA.
