The 5km Carel du Toit Fun Walk, in aid of the Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children, will be held on Sunday 22 April at 09h00 on the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital.

Dog owners are welcome to also enter their dogs for this fun-filled event.

This year is the 10th anniversary of this Fun Walk, in aid of deaf children. All proceeds go towards the Carel du Toit Centre, which is nationally considered as the leading educational institution for deaf children. The centre caters for learners from all over the Cape Peninsula.

At this extraordinary Centre, deaf children are taught to communicate with speech. If a child is diagnosed with deafness early enough and fitted with the correct hearing aids, they can learn to speak normally, attend a mainstream school and reach their full potential. Children who are diagnosed with deafness too late are unable to catch up on developmental delays. These children will stay outsiders to the community due to their lack of speech and language, being unable to express themselves sufficiently.

Carel du Toit is the only centre in the country that accommodates deaf children from birth. The Centre also runs a support programme for parents of deaf children. This programme can be attended from the moment the child is diagnosed with a hearing disability, regardless of age.
