If you remember record players, tape recorders and blank TDK tapes, this is absolutely a show to watch.
If you don’t… Another Friggin Tribute Show is still a great laugh. What makes it such a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining show to watch is Pierre Malherbe has taken those normal experiences we’ve all had (if you’re on the wrong side of thirty) and with his slightly exaggerated antics, yet very engaging behaviour, turned them into hysterical sketches. Often audience members will be left thinking “hey that was me as a kid” or find themselves suddenly remembering long lost childhood memories…
Pierre Malherbe’s show is a non-musical tribute to the bands, artists and musical experiences that shaped his life. It is not just a walk down memory lane for Malherbe and the audience (who doesn’t remember taping music from the radio?) but also a light hearted commentary of the South African music industry over the past decades. He reminisces about Gruesome Gresh’s Pop Shop TV show, The Top Twenty Hit Parade and music DJ’s who talk too much. Perhaps Gareth Cliff should watch this show…
Then of course there are the memories that are uniquely Malherbe’s… Like that special costume he used to wear while listening to Engelbert Humperdink. His The Smiths and Pink Floyd phase and dislike for Prime Circle and Nickelback. I’d really like to know why though…
Another Friggin Tribute Show is running at the Kalk Bay Theatre Wednesdays to Saturdays until 3 November. Shows start at 8:30pm and tickets are R85 show only or R160 including dinner.
