Description
Curated by Winnie Sze, the collaborative project, Under Construction, involves the meticulous construction and spectacular public destruction of a complex wooden structure in the District Six Museum to ask poignant questions around what it means to be a resident in the city.
After hours of precariously creating his work, it is ceremonially kicked - destroyed in seconds. Resonating with the history of District Six, Under Construction becomes about identity and architecture; self-built monuments that create institutional identities, and how they are challenged; how we read our bodies, relative to our environment: protected and sheltered, or humble and vulnerable.
After the collapse of the installation, UCT School of Architecture lecturers Mike Louw and Kevin Fellingham and their students will turn the wood units into furniture for the communities of District Six and the Imizamo Yethu township in Hout Bay.
