The competition attracts hundreds of children, families and corporate teams, who compete to build the most creative and impressive sand castles possible, in aid of education funds. Registration takes place on the beach at 8.30am and the competition kicks off at 9.30am and runs until 1pm. Food and drink stalls as well as music, pony rides and a fun park will ensure it’s a full day of family entertainment.
Funds raised go to the Valley Pre-Primary Sonwabile Fund and Hout Bay Educare in the Hangberg area of Hout Bay. Valley Pre-Primary schools Sonwabile Fund pays for five children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend Valley Pre-Primary each year. 50% of the funds will go toward building a secure fence around the Hout Bay Educare property where security issues prevent improvements to the playground.
Companies are also invited to enter corporate teams of six or to sponsor teams of underprivileged children from Hout Bay who form the Sonwabile teams. Corporate and Sonwabile teams can be branded on the day.
Entry fees are R30 an adult and R15 a child. Corporate teams and sponsored Sonwabile teams pay R700. School teams competing in the interschool category pay R150. Members of the public that would like to support the event but prefer not to compete, can buy raffle tickets, support the food and drink stalls and cheer the contestants on.
The date is chosen to coincide with low tide so there will be loads of space for builders and people watchers. Fantastic prizes are awarded to winners in each category as selected by celebrity judges.
